Eating the wrong fruits can be worse than eating none at all
What Are the Top 5 Fruits?
Expert Reveals How Eating the Wrong Fruits Can Be Worse Than Eating None at All
An apple a day just doesn’t cut it anymore, and too many apples could make you fat.
That’s the advice of Iva Young, a nutritional expert who warns that the wrong kinds of fruits can actually do more harm than good.
“We really should be smart about the fruits we consume,” said Young, author of Healthy Mom (www.ivayoung.com). “After all, remember that fruits are very similar to breads, pastas, rice, and other high carbohydrate-rich foods in that fruits are high in carbs. That is one reason why we should only consume a certain amount, and choose the fruits that are lower in sugar. If you pick the right fruits and eat the proper portions, then you will give your body what it needs and it will benefit greatly from your efforts.”
So, which fruits offer the biggest health boost? Young named the following fruits, all of which are comparatively low in sugar, as her top five:
- Raspberries - Raspberries are an excellent source of fiber, offering 30 percent of our recommended daily value, 8 grams per serving. Raspberries are also a rich source of vitamin C, with about 50 percent of our daily value. In addition, they are a rich source of manganese, delivering 60 percent of what we should have each day. Raspberries rank near the top of all fruits for antioxidant strength and contain many anti-disease properties if consumed regularly, helping to fight against inflammation, chronic pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, allergies, age-related cognitive decline and eyesight degeneration associated with aging.
- Blackberries - Blackberries are notable for their high nutritional contents of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, and manganese. Blackberries are well-ranked for having strong antioxidant levels, and they also contain copious amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
- Kiwi - Kiwi is a rich source of vitamin C and vitamin K, which is a natural blood thinner. It’s also a good source of potassium, just slightly less than that of a banana. Potassium is one of those nutrients that’s absolutely essential for heart health, yet many people don’t get nearly enough. Kiwi also delivers a mild laxative effect, possibly because of the high level of dietary fiber.
- Strawberries - Strawberries are low in calories compared to many other fruits, and are a good source of fiber. They are also an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids, promoting lots of antioxidant activity in the body.
- Oranges - Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin A and C, along with powerful antioxidants. Oranges also provide a good source of fiber when the pulp is consumed. The white pith of the orange also contains flavonoids, and some doctors are even using extracts from the pith to help fight certain types of cancer.
“Sugar is also something that you should keep your eye on, because it affects the health of your teeth and the functioning of your hormones, specifically leptin,” she added. “Leptin is the important hormone responsible for telling the body that you should stop eating. With excess amounts of sugar in your body, the amount of leptin is diminished, which causes you to overeat. Excess sugar also has been known to cause intestinal issues increasing the chances of bloating, which causes your stomach to stick out and look like you have extra fat. That’s how consuming too many sugar-rich fruits can actually make you look fat, and make you feel less healthy than if you didn’t eat any fruits at all.”

Over a million people walk by shelves of counterfeit product every day and have no idea it’s been placed there illegally. Our neighborhood drugstores and retailers carry them, and unknowingly, they are bought every day.
Welcome to the underground world of Cosmetics Diversion. Where products are illegally bought and sold much like drugs and other contraband just to make a profit.
Illegal Diversion occurs when a distributer sells a product to a retailer which they do not have a legal contract to do so. This is considered to be “Black Market” or “Grey Market” product on the shelves of retailers.
When professional hair product is seen on the shelves of big box retailers or drugstores, it is a diversion product. If it’s not in a salon, it’s not licensed to sell it. This trend has also moved into the cosmetics and fragrances world as well.
Bare Escentuals, i.d. Minerals Make-Up has recently appeared on Target and Costco shelves. It’s unclear still to BE Executives which distributer is responsible. There has been an ongoing investigation since fall of 2008 with no success. BE is just a small fraction of the Diversion Market.
Paul Mitchell, Redken, Bed Head, Biolage are all other name brands that are manufactured with the intention of being sold ONLY to licensed professional hair salons and spas. The fact of the matter is, it isn’t illegal for these other retailers to sell professional products. What is illegal is when the companies distribution chain breaches contract.
By purchasing black market products you are not only buying into a world of hijacking, illegal immigrants and counterfeit you are also aiding an industry that increases insurance rates and product prices.
Steps to Diversion and how this affects you
Agreement is reached illegally between a salon and sales representative outside of the normal distribution chain.
Product is then ordered and received.
Trucks are hijacked, products stolen
Insurance claims are made increasing rates locally and nationally.
Product prices are raised to cover the lost from stolen goods.
Payment is made then product changes hands.
Products are then transported to warehouses where illegal employees remove barcodes and/or tamper with products.
Decoded products are then shipped to discount stores, grocery stores, etc..
Products are marked up on an average of 10% higher than salon prices in these locations.
What to do if you suspect a company is participating. Contact the companies Diversion Hotline or Customer Service line which can generally be found right on their website.

Another on-location photoshoot this past week in NYC reminded me of why condensing products is essential to efficient and easy travel. Before leaving, I went through my train cases and eliminated about 10 pounds of products that weren’t completely necessary in order to make my travels through the train stations, cabs and the busy streets of 6th ave.
Even after my 2 hour long re-packing session, I still found there to be room for improvement. Here are some tips and tricks I’ve acquired over the years of prepping and planning for shoots and film sets that can easily be applied to your own personal travel.
Mini sized sets are key to saving space in your case. There are so many brands out there that have travel sized options for your beauty needs. Blue Q being one of them. Not only is the packaging eye catching, fragrances beautiful but the prices are extremely reasonable.
Miso Pretty Mini Kit $19.99 ~ Contents: Peony hand cream, deep sea body wash, blossoming cherry lip balm and two persimmon beauty bars. www.blueq.com
Ziploc bags and palettes are key to pretty easy travel. Avoiding products in glass containers as they are heavy and take up too much space. Ziploc bags are also ideal for any liquids like shampoos, body washes, hair sprays, etc in case they burst.
Take shadow, check and lip palettes instead of individuals, there’s more of a variety and less space to take up. Not to mention ease of use when dealing with small bathroom counters in hotels.
This 3rd Edition 120 colour palette by Bh Cosmetics is ideal. 120 colours would cover every occasion, day or night. It’s a steal at $34.95, they also have loads of other sets to choose from, why not grab a few! http://www.bhcosmetics.com
Keeping clean can also pose a challenge. Money is filthy, so giving cash to your cabby, then going to grab a bite to eat can feed your body full of germs and other toxins. I find it a necessity always pack plenty of hand sanitizers in my purse, kits and suitcases. The more natural they are, the less dry they make your hands.

Let it Rip!!! Finally, a painless waxing kit
Ouchless Waxing Prep Kit created by Anesthesiologist, Dr. Edna Ma, M.D.
Why should waxing be an excruciating, embarrassing and wholly unpleasant experience?
Dr. Edna Ma, M.D. board-certified Anesthesiologist and pain management expert, asked herself that very question when she experienced her first Brazilian bikini wax. As with Carrie Bradshaw of renowned Sex and the City fame, who was horrified by her first Brazilian while vacationing with her gal pals in L.A., Dr. Ma suffered through the procedure, wincing from the pain and waiting patiently for the agony to end, all the while thinking, “Wait a minute… why should this hurt? I’m a doctor and pain specialist… I can DO something about this!!!”
Fortunately, Dr. Ma’s pain is our pleasure… as it resulted in the development of the first-ever, ouchless, garment-based, numbing kit for bikini hair removal!
Announcing BareEase & Cream – a preparatory kit for use by women undergoing waxing and laser procedures to painlessly remove unsightly and unwanted hair in the sensitive bikini area.
Featuring lidocaine (4%) as its active ingredient, (the most safe, widely used topical anesthetic and superior numbing agent), along with natural ingredients including aloe and jojoba, the kit’s specially doctor-formulated cream will not only eradicate the pain and discomfort associated with waxing and lasers, but its skin soothing and moisturizing components will leave your skin feeling soft, silky and sexy! The cream is quickly absorbed into the skin underneath the cute pink panty made of latex, which segregates the cream from clothing and outside air, allowing for complete absorption and maximum results, while being discreet! Available in two sizes, small/medium and medium/large – and with the super-stretchy qualities of soft latex, women of virtually any size/shape will fit comfortably into the disposable pink panty.
For women on-the-go, the kit can be used just prior to departing for any waxing or laser hair removal appointment, so that once you’re at the spa or physician’s office, you’re nice and numb and done in mere minutes… so you can get back to significantly more important things!

Seasonal changes affect more than just our weight and skin. Hair is noticeably shedding, dry and brittle. Styling tasks that are normally fairly easy become difficult and unmanageable. Damage that is caused by sun, salt and chlorine can easily be repaired but why not take a few extra steps to prevent as well as correct?
Maintain hair by using a good shampoo and conditioner. Before going out into the sun use silicone or hair oil to protect from sun, salt and chlorine. There are some great hair SPF sprays and creams on the market as well that are fantastic for added protection.
New York Stylist, Penny Williams has some great tips problems such as these.
TRIM: Hair doesn’t always need to be chopped off in order to rid damaged split ends. Cutting as little as ¼ inch will make a big difference.
TREAT: “Everyone should deep condition at least one time a month.” For Heavy damage he suggests once a week and for Moderate damage once every two weeks.
RECIPE FOR REPAIR:
~Shampoo and condition hair.
~Towel dry to remove excess water.
~Apply hydrating hair mask.
~Comb through hair gently and ensure that it’s applied to all sections
~Cover with a plastic shower cap
~Depending on damage leave in for 30 min to half a day
~Rinse out
~Apply treatment oil, concentrating on damaged ends
~Apply remaining oil to hair shaft and lightly directly on roots if necessary
Another suggestion Penny makes is to “make sure you always use a thermal treatment” when using heated tools such as a blow drier or flat iron to protect hair from further damage. One thing most people don’t take into consideration is what they just resurrected their hair from.
For shampoo and conditioner, Penny recommends Derm Organic’s Argan Oil Line. Derm Organic is extremely hydrating, sulfate free and is safe for color treated hair. The entire kit can be purchased for only $44 and includes full sized Argan Oil Shampoo, Masque (conditioner) and Argan Oil.
